Population: 1,3 millions History at a glance The city of Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 by Grand Duke Georgy Vsevolodovich. In the 14th century (1341-1392) Nizhny Novgorod was a capital of the grand duchy. In the 15th-17th centuries - a chief town of the uyezd (district), and from 1714 till 1929 - a principal town of the province. In 1929-1932 the city got a centre of Nizhny Novgorod Territory. From October 7th in 1932 the city got named as Gorky after the great Russian writer Alexey Maximovich Gorky. On October 22th in 1990 the city was renamed back to its historical name Nizhny Novgorod according to the referendum results and the decree of the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) Supreme Soviet Presidium. Approximately 100 different ethnic nationalities live in Nizhny Novgorod though. At present time 28 national-cultural societies are officially registered in the city. Location Nizhny Novgorod is placed in the Central European part of Russia and lies at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers at a distance of 440 km to the east from Moscow. The local climate is temperate continental. There is a balneoclimatic resort area Zelyony Gorod (Green City in English) at a distance of 25 km from Nizhny Novgorod (within its suburb).
